Caitlyn Chapman Interview

What song or artist do you vibe to the most for creative energy?

Lately I can’t get enough of Mother Mother. I use a stand up desk when I’m working and I love rocking out while I work!

When was the turning point that you noticed clients and projects approaching you instead of you approaching them?

People will always tell you it’s all about who you know, and it’s true! I started to see people being referred to me by friends, family, and clients. Word of mouth and a good product are your best forms of advertising.

What skills do you appreciate most in creatives when working together on a shoot?

Professionalism, good communication, and creativity.

Spencer wears a vest by Esprit.
Dahlia wears a dress by Lungo L’arno.

What do you think is the most challenging and rewarding thing about working with new models vs experienced models?

New models are actually really fun to work with. They don’t often quite understand just how much work and experience it takes to be a skilled model. It’s so much more than being just a pretty face. I find myself teaching some of them how to be aware of the light, [to be aware of] their lines and expressions and to give lots of variety. All the while, remembering to show off their product. It’s a lot of fun!

How have you evolved as a photographer when you reflect on the past five years?

The biggest thing I’ve learned is to simplify in every aspect from gear to light to posing to hair, makeup, and clothing. Decide what the hero of the shot is then amplify that and let everything else fall into line.

What is your number one piece of advice for new photographers trying to find their niche?

Don’t fuss over gear. Honestly, you can create amazing work with the crappiest equipment. Concentrate instead on learning how to bend light to your will, and connecting with your clients. The rest will follow.

Also, shoot what you love. Don’t shoot weddings and families because you think you have to. If you want to photograph dogs, then do it.

If you want to shoot rock concerts, do it. Bugs? Do it. Whatever you choose to photograph, photograph it well. The clients will come if you do it well.

Hannah wears a dress by Velvet Heart.
Dahlia wears Caution into the Wind.
