“This concept is based on my own childhood experience. Being raised in Japan, I was fixed on the bias that I should aim for ‘the typical ideal,’ which the majority of Japanese people take for granted. From a young age, they are taught to fall in-line, and as a result they tend to disapprove of people who are unique. Because of my upbringing, I always cared about what other people thought of me. It was stress inducing and I often felt like I was trapped in a cage. I wanted to illustrate these feelings that I had throughout my childhood. I now believe that it is important to be yourself regardless of others’ opinions.” – Misaki Shimizu
