World renowned photographer Nancy Schoenmakers shot her series in Medellin, Colombia. As a machismo country, it’s hard to be and feel ‘different’ in Colombia. That’s why she wanted to focus on being who you are in an environment such as this. Nancy shot the series with a local team in one of the most dangerous and notorious districts of Medellin: Comuna 13. Even though a lot of transformations are happening in the area, there’s still a lot of gun violence and drug related problems.
By working with a model with alopecia, a disease where you don’t have any hair, and used stylings where gender didn’t play any role, she wanted to show beauty in being oneself and celebrating the freedom to be exactly that.
