“All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
I’ve been for a walk on a winter’s day
I’d be safe and warm if I was in L.A.
California dreamin’ on such a winter’s day.”– John and Michelle Phillips

Through his photo essay, photographer Nathan Dumlao shares the longing to be in another place on a cold winter day. Inspired by homesickness, his relatable photo essay displays the contrast of being confronted by unpleasant memories, desire for change, and longing to break out of desperation or depression and hopes to convey that the subject dreams of being someplace better. But is a change of scenery enough to change our mood? The subject exudes the same feelings of despair in a warmer place, which concludes it’s within ourselves that change must happen in order for contentment.
